Job Description – Biologist

The Miramichi Salmon Association (MSA) will be hiring a Biologist based at the Miramichi Salmon Conservation Centre office in South Esk, New Brunswick starting in early May 2017.  The Biologist will report directly to the President of the MSA and will supervise MSA field staff, students, job creation employees, and volunteers. 

The primary duties of the position are to plan, budget, supervise, and conduct the field programs of the MSA and assist in the education, communication, and fundraising programs.  Preparing applications for funding, collaborating with government and university researchers, designing experiments, writing reports, and communicating results to MSA members and directors will be critical assignments for this position.

The position requires some travel, physical work, and working evenings and weekends (depending on program requirements) which vary greatly from season to season.  The candidate must be in good physical condition, possess a valid driver’s license, be able to wade in swift water, operate a motor boat, and operate scientific equipment such as, electrofishers, oxygen meters, GPS instruments, electronic balances, PIT tag detectors, and other related equipment.

The applicant should possess:

A positive, outgoing personality and get along with staff and volunteers, as well as the general public. The Biologist will also participate in MSA outreach activities with youth and the general public.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor of Science degree or better
  • Relevant work experience
  • Possess excellent computer (Microsoft Office, Google Earth, ArcGIS) and internet skills
  • Possess excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Be proficient in the English language
  • It would be considered an asset if the candidate has worked in aquatic biology or fisheries related science

There will be a 6-month probationary period to determine the suitability of the candidate with the program requirements.  The salary range has been established, but the starting rate will depend on education and experience.
